To an outsider German and Dutch may sound similar, I can assure you
that A Dutch native speaker that has never been confronted with
German, will not understand a native german speaker.
I don't understand either spoken to any great extent. (Maybe 2-3 words in 15 of German and, 1 in 20 of Dutch?) I do a lot better if the passages are written (typed I should say, for fear of being presented with peculiar national
scripts). A fractional gist of the written material is way better than zero comprehension. I did a lot of reading in my younger years.

Merkel does not. But she speaks Russian...
Yes, I knew that she shied away from showing that she can 'follow' the lingo. Her ability with Russian surprises me.
